When the rebel jazz bassist-composer Charles Mingus died, in 1979, Elvis
Costello was just beginning to blast into pop consciousness with songs like “Alison” and “Oliver’s
Army.” For the past 25 years, Costello has directed that energy into collaborations
with string quartets, opera singers, and ballet companies while keeping his aim
true to his rock ’n’ roll passions. When the voice and lyrics of Costello
meet the music of Mingus, played by 16 of the world’s top jazz musicians,
fireworks are bound to ensue.
